Safe methods for painting your birdhouses

Paint and Wood finishes for the outside of your birdhouse
To keep your wood from rotting off your trees you should use a lead free paint or or tarnish. The birds will probably peck away at what ever finish or paint you put on so lets make sure they are safe. Any latex paint will be safe for your birds.

Linseed oils are a good way to protect your wood from the elements. Stay away from petroleum-based oils.

Do not paint the insides or your birdhouses
Painting the inside of the house is really not needed. Chicks will peck away at the inside and will ingest the chips.

Use one that is food safe, such as linseed oil, not petroleum-based oil, for maximum safety.

Use natural colors on your birdhouses
Some birdhouses are nice and bright. These are definitely eye catching and can really compliment your backyard. We recommend more natual colors when painting your bird houses. Tans, browns, greens and other Earth tones will help keep the chicks and parents safe by blending them into the surroundings.
