Here is a quick checklist for the do it yourselfers. We suggest
you gather the material you'll need for making your birdhouse or
birdfeeder. Make sure you are using a birdhouse
friendly wood by checking our list of safe woods. If you are
planning on painting your birdhouse or bird feeder then you might
want to make sure you are using a bird
friendly paint.
Screwdriver
A Philips head or a Flat head. This will all depend on the types of screws you'll
use in making your bird house or bird feeder.
Hammer
You'll want a hammer with a nail remover on the back end of it. Hey
we all make mistakes so it's always good to be able to undo any
errors that we can. Saw
A powersaw or a handheld saw will do the trick.
T-square
This will make sure that your corners fit snug. We don't want the chicks to
fall out now do we!
Drill and Bits
We're going to have to drill and entrance hole so we'll need some
power. You'll also want to drill some ventilation holes on the
sides of the bird house to help the air flow and of course allow
drainage. Screws, Nails, Hinges, Fasteners
We would recommend that you use screws since they hold the wood together
the best as your birdhouse ages. Hinges and fasteners are a great
way to clean out the old nesting materials when the seasons change.
This is always a good idea since bugs and parasites that attach
themselves to birds can spread from occupant to occupant. A hinged
roof will give you easy access to get the job done.
